This thread is a follow on from the original "Cry for help" thread posted by Ronin49 here.
I decided to create a new thread for those of you who, like me, just hit the search function and look for "[REL]" threads I've uploaded a comprehensive manual for the Enchanted Editor on my personal website: Enchanted Editor Manual Download link I've had complaints before about difficulty downloading from my personal website (possibly due to too many users at once) so those of you who have it feel free to share, either by emailing it or uploading it to one of the big MW sites. After three days of typing this up, spell checking and so on I'm just to lazy to jump through hoops like half the big download sites make you do. The download is a zip file containing a bunch of web pages and associated graphics. just unzip it to whatever folder you like. Make sure "use folder names" is ticked when you extract otherwise the graphic and other files won't be in the right place and won't show in the web pages. To read the manual, double click the "Index.htm" file. This is the overview page and links to all the others. Actually all of the pages link to each other so you can double click any one of the ".htm" files but the overview is the best place to start. One feature I doubt even advanced users of EE are using is the ability to alter the file format template, which allows you to improve EE by changing some of that info that currently shows up as "Unknown" in the Editor to more sensible and usable information. I've tried to be as clear as possible in describing how it works but this is only for really advanced users and programmer types who know what "byte", "long", "short", "string" and other coding terms mean. Major thanks go out to the following inventive and clued up people, who's advice about various cunning ways to use the Enchanted Editor I scavenged from this and the old forum and included in the manual: Argent Hellwolve Yu_Gi DinkumThinkum ManaUser LaxScrutiny GhanBuriGhan The manual covers the following topics: General -Overview -Keyboard shortcuts File information and operations -Structure of a Morrowind data file -Creating, opening and saving files -Support Files -Managing ID indices -Changing the file type (Master, Plugin or Save) -File Statistics -Exporting to a text file -File Format Template (advanced) -Updated file format template file Clipboard operations -The clipboard -Deleting, cutting, copying and pasting -Safe Editing Navigation -Navigating files and their contents -Browsing references of a record -Finding stuff Editing records and subrecords -Required subrecords and IDs -Inserting new records & Subrecords -Sorting subrecords in a record -Editing subrecord properties -Working with marked entries Examples and Info -Examples of use -Additional useful information The "Examples and Info" section includes the following examples and general information from the people I mentioned above for examples of how to use EE and other useful information: Examples: * Purging Unneeded Data from a FINISHED Quest Mod While Keeping Wanted Items.- Yu-Gi * Add a completely new visual for an existing magical effect (not possible in CK) - Hellwolve * Get rid of constant effects that won't go away - Hellwolve * Reduce a 5MB Save Game File to 1MB (FPS increase and kills most "doubling"") - Farren/ManaUser * Adding more destinations to a mage guide than just 5 (CK limit) - Farren * Change your character's hair & head without CTD or other problems - Hellwolve. * A semi-painless way to copy dialogue topics - Laxscrutiny * On resetting the world map - GhanBuriGhan Further information: * Dirty Saves - DinkumThinkum * How to clean a saved game (part 2 - In game method) - DinkumThinkum * How to clean a saved game (part 3 - TESAME) - Nigedo * How to clean a saved game (part 4 - Removing textures changes that linger) - Dave Humphrey A big thanks to Ronin49 for getting me off my lazy bum and convincing me to actually write documentation for the Enchanted Editor. I hope this will help all of you who downloaded it, ran it and went "Huh!!!???" Yours gratefully (for being such a vibrant and generally cool community to do stuff for) Farren This post has been edited by Farren1: Sep 11 2004, 08:49 AM |

Farren1 and all the contributors - thank you so very much for this extremely useful gift to the community. As occasionally heard on the old Forums, "Asked and answered." *trophies all round* Now with these directions, some of us should be able to get into real trouble! Magnificent, thank you.
N.B. It downloaded just fine, thank you. This post has been edited by Ronin49: Sep 11 2004, 09:40 AM -------------------- |

Thank you. EE is one of the most useful Morrowind utilities. I use it frequently, and look forward to learning more about all the stuff I don't begin to understand. I pull it out to clean saves everytime my game starts crashing, and it has saved me from trashing my own mods when I somehow messed them up. It is nice to hear from you.

Thanks Farren, I opened the Enhanced Editor earlier and was, well, a little scared of it.

Yes indeed thank you for this wonderful manual, it should really help a lot of people get a feel for the enchanted editor. A very welcome addition to my Morrowind support files, not to mention the new templete. This rocks!!!!!

Just used it to solve two problems, one with a corrupted script and sound generator for a deleted creature in my saved game and one for a conflict between Illuminated Order and Necessities of Morrowind. Sweet and subtle and powerful tool. Thanks Faren. |

So I'm looking at body parts with the editor and I see that it doesn't
completely decode the BYDT subrecord. It's easy enough to do this by eye if you have the following chart handy. CODE BYDT Subrecord of BODY record Field Value Description Bodypart 0 Head 1 Hair 2 Neck 3 Chest 4 Groin 5 Hands 6 Wrist 7 Forearm 8 Upper Arm 9 Foot 10 Ankle 11 Knee 12 Upper Leg 13 Clavicle 14 Tail PartVampire 0 No 1 Yes PartFlags 0 Male 1 Female PartType 0 Skin 1 Clothing 2 Armour Can this information be encoded into the template system, or is it already stretched as far as it will go? Paddy Nope, unfortunately showing BodyPart, PartVampire, Partflags and PartType as numeric data is as far as the format template allows. At least it shows you BodyPart, PartVampire, Partflags and PartType as seperate values and allows you to enter a number next to each. But you got me thinking, it would be sooo easy for me to add dropdown list definitions in the format template for specific property types, allowing you to turn these into drop-down lists. I just have to stabilise my overly ambitious and broken current code (as I described to you via PM) Dammit. You're really making this hard for me. I may have to go back, dig through spaghetti and release another version. D*mn you This post has been edited by Farren1: Sep 12 2004, 06:48 AM |

Thanks for the info by the way Beryllium. Even if I don't get round to the extra features descibed above I'll definitely include your chart in the next revision of the manual.
To anyone else who's deciphered information in saves or plugins that might be useful to other users let me know so I can collate it all as an appendix of the manual (with credits of course). Considering the community has figured out how to do half a dozen things not possible in the CK without even the benfit of MWE (a marvellous innovation, BTW), I'm sure tons more is waiting to be discovered. |

QUOTE(The_Silent_Pyro @ Sep 11 2004, 11:12 PM) I wasn't planning a new version. Unfortunately what happened is that I made several ambitoius changes, got distracted by work and my own game, left it for a year and came back to find code that doesn't work 100% that I don't fully understand any more. So I'm in the wierd position where in order to expand on the EE I have to first get re-acquainted with my own code. If I'd left it in a stable state this would be NP. But as it stands I'd first have to fix up some of the ballsups I introduced with my last changes just to make it as stable as the current release version, before I could do further stuff. I wouldn't want to release a version that was less stable than the last one. That said, I might just do it. I might, also, not, considering I've dived into a game of my own (very much inspired by MW, I'll admit) with some other programmers and have serious work commitments... Anybody who wants to get their teeth into this might care to look at the ENAM sub-records of Enchantments. Obviously the numbers mean something... such as the spell type.... but what numbers mean what? A nice bit of detective work there for somebody. |
