[REL] Leveled List Resequencer v1.0 for TESTool

This utility fixes the bug with TESTool's merged leveled lists reported in this thread.

Here's the readme:

Leveled List Resequencer v1.0 for TESTool
by aerelorn

Overview:

This utility fixes a bug in TESTool v1.3 by ghostwheel. As discovered by tru021 and later researched extensively by DinkumThinkum, when TESTOOL merges leveled lists it appends the lists one after another instead of sorting them all together by level. The result is that the items and creatures from later lists cannot appear until you're beyond the highest level listed in all the preceeding lists.

Since ghostwheel is currently MIA, this utility takes the Merged_Leveled_Lists.esp file created by TESTOOL and resequences the lists by level into the proper order. Hopefully he will return someday and make it obsolete.

Instructions:

1. Use TESTOOL to create the Merged_Leveled_Lists.esp file.

2. Place Leveled List Resequencer.exe in your /Morrowind/ or /Morrowind/Data Files/ directory and run it. When it's completed, it will let you know how many lists were resequenced out of the total. A file called Log - Resequencer.txt will be created if you want specific details on which lists were resequenced.

3. That's it, go play!

Having gone through my own Merged_Leveled_Lists.esp yesterday in the CS and corrected everything by hand (which took me about 20 mins to do) I'm willing to try this out, especially if it does what it says it will in a lot less time than correcting it in the CS does!

Btw, no leveled lists required resequence.
Meaning that the set of plugins im using and the order i placed them makes testool plenty funcional

Just to be sure it was working tried another set and this time:
Sucess: 56 of 1273 leveled lists re-sequenced in file:

the main diff between the 2 sets. On the 1st I was only using 870 leveled lists on the 2nd i was using 1273 due to activation of several mods that add lots of leveled lists.

I didn't follow the previous posting about this issue. Though I've seen it remain near the top of my unread postings, and man did I ever intend on reading it..just never got around to it. Also like another stated I didn't even realize there was a problem with TESTooL until eariler tonight when I Dled this utility. Man I have to say big gaming difference.

I had noticed before that several creatures advertised in several Readmes never seemed to come out to play. I had always assumed I was either too low level..or somehow in the wrong place at the wrong time. Boy was I wrong. Not 5 min's after resequencing my LvL lists and playing did I see my first creature I had never seen before. And while the creature beat me about the head & shoulders until I passed out, and then passed into the afterlife, I was merry and quite pleased all the while!

So thank you for plugging a hole that few even realized had been leaking.

First:

The unsung hero of this is tru021 : without his sharp eyes and recognition that something was wrong, followed by his investigation to see what was going on, there's no telling how long this serious bug might have been overlooked.

Second:

A big thank you to aerelorn for coming up with a solution so quickly. With Ghostwheel (the creator of TESTool) gone, aerelorn's add-on utility is a great way to solve the problem.

Third:

Gravy certainly deserves a mention , since I think he was the first to suggest an add-on utility along the lines of what aerelorn created.

Fourth:

Me?

1. I'm happily letting that other thread fade into oblivion, now that it's mission is done!

2. I'm trying to figure out where I was in various Morrowind-related projects before I got sidetracked by investigating this.

3. I'm looking forward to going to sleep without any more visions of leveled lists of sheep jumping over fences.

As I posted in another thread:

I strongly recommend that modders who use leveled lists in their mods include information about using aerelorn's Resequencer in conjuction with TESTool's list merger function; otherwise, your mod probably won't work as you intended it for the people who download it.

From posts here and in the other thread about this problem, plus other posts about mod problems in the past, it's becoming pretty obvious that some mods were broken for a lot of people (because of the TESTool problem), but most users didn't realize it: too many mods installed to know what was working and what wasn't, thinking they hadn't reached the right level or right situation to see creatures or items added by a mod, etc.

So I am very very glad that this has been resolved; now we just need to get the word out to modders and mod users about the need to use both TESTool and the Resequencer for any mods that use leveled lists.

Well that explains why the Mod I'm developing works on it's own but not when I add it to my normal play set of Mods.

Excellent work guys, and thanks for saving me the nightmare of trying to track down a fault that didn't make sense to me.

Yes, if tru021 hadn't made the original thread who knows how long it would've been before someone else noticed and investigated it, if ever. But then the thread might have died permanently(especially with the upcoming forum change) if you hadn't resurrected it. So we're lucky on both counts.

Thank you! I was wondering why I wasn't getting MWA and Mephisto's Creatures after running them through TESTool.

BTW I had 77 out of 777 leveled list resequenced! Lucky number!

As these forum threads are probably going to disappear soon, could someone make a webpage on how to merge one's mods correctly, with links to the websites with utility downloads/download pages? I disappear for a few days and this comes out. I echo all the previous thanks to Aerelorn for a swift and effective fix to the levelled list problem, at least it will save me time in fixing my playing lists.

And seeing my name in a mod readme, well I never thought I see the day.

I take it that this fix can be done at *any* time, no need to begin a new game?!

yes the other merge tool generated a zillion posts about that "one item or ten items in boxes/chests". not to be used.

now if Ghostweel, or someone, were to fix the dialogue merging in testool......

other wise testool is good to use.

Cool, thanks for the utility.

I know someone PM'd Ghostwheel about the bug and didn't hear back, but has anyone subsequently PM'd him with a link to this thread in case he eventually checks his mail? Hopefully one day this fix can be integrated into the main TESTool utility.

I am truly in awe of the ingenuity and talents of the mod makers on this board. A problem is identified (and ample kudos to all involved who fettered out a serious issue with a much-used utility!) and within days a modder steps up and provides a solution.

This is definitely what this community is all about and makes me check in once a day to see what the creative minds that inhabit these treads have come up with next!

I installed it last night, at level one, there were , of course, no changes.


but!

HEADS UP.....
there is a very small 'gotcha", that everyone is to be aware of!!


After I ran the Program, placing it in my data folder: there were 86 changed entries, i made a small Discovery.

that the testool, of COURSE , places, now, the "fixed" leveled list
into the middle of the mods, halfway down the list of mods!
Testool "LIKES" to do this: anytime that one diddles in any way with the merged three lists, they are automatically re-timed so that they are now up in the middle of the mods, not at the very very bottom where they are supposed to be!

You probably also have to "re-header stamp" the fixed leveled list too, as well as "re-time" it! Treat this "fixed" leveled list *as* a new mod!!


while i am at it, sports fans, i better ask one more question, here!
---what about the "leveled item/object list"? is this list, too, also merged in a similar way as to cause a miss-placing of game objects? there are mods that require its objects and items to be "just so", and if there is a problem with this item leveled list, there *might* be a need to have a re-sequencer for it, too!

By my rough count TESTool 1.3 does that every time. That is why I use ReorderPlugins - available at Morrowind Source - each time I use TESTool merge functions.

So, the new shuffle for me will be - check Data Files splashscreen, TESTool, Resequencer, ReorderPlugins, check Data Files screen ----> load.

But a pleasure to have it working properly.

Nice work Aerolorn - I seem to have completely missed the thread exposing this problem with the leveled lists. Three cheers for everone involved .

Hopefully this will be the end of the slippery leveled list beast!
